We've been saying for years that Linux is a better building material, and open source is a better building method, than the closed and proprietary alternatives.
We also have no doubt that the catastrophes of September 11 created countless situations where the virtues of Linux and open source were called into service -- not just in New York and Washington, but all over the world.
Linux Journal covers lots of subjects, but fundamentally we're a how-to magazine. We give the Linux community a useful way to explain what it does, both to itself and to everybody else with a need to know.
That second group -- everybody else -- grew enormously after September 11. There is a constant need to build and rebuild computing and communications infrastructure, but after that date simple need turned to deep urgency for countless companies, public and private institutions, and individuals.
How is are Linux, BSD, Open Source and Free Software being put to work? There must be countless stories. We'd like to help share them, in Linux Journal, Embedded Linux Journal and here on the Web. We can't think of anything that would do more -- both for the community and for the civilized world.
